Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about donating tech, getting a computer, volunteering, and more.

Donating Technology

What items do you accept?

We accept most electronics including laptops, desktops, smartphones, tablets, monitors, printers, keyboards, mice, cables, and accessories. We also accept servers, networking equipment, and other IT infrastructure. Items should be complete—we can't accept devices missing major components.

What items do you NOT accept?

We cannot accept CRT monitors/TVs, microwaves, large appliances, smoke detectors, or items contaminated with hazardous materials. We also cannot accept broken glass or heavily damaged items. When in doubt, give us a call before visiting.

Do I need to wipe my data before donating?

You don't have to, but you can if you prefer. We securely sanitize all data-bearing devices using NIST SP800-88 compliant methods. Your data is protected from the moment you drop off until destruction is complete.

Can I get a receipt for my donation?

Yes! As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we provide donation receipts for tax purposes. Just ask at drop-off and we'll provide documentation. For corporate donations, we can provide detailed itemized receipts.

Do you offer pickup service for large donations?

Yes, we offer scheduled pickup service for large donations (20+ devices) and corporate donations in the Portland metro area. Contact us to schedule a pickup at your location.

Getting a Computer

How can I get a free computer?

Our Plug Into Portland program provides free laptops to individuals in need. Apply through our website to get on the waitlist. You'll receive a refurbished laptop running Linux Mint with a one-year warranty and Digital Navigation support.

Who is eligible for a free computer?

Our free computer program prioritizes individuals and families experiencing financial hardship, students without access to a computer for schoolwork, seniors, and people with disabilities. Eligibility is based on demonstrated need.

How long is the waitlist?

Wait times vary depending on inventory and demand. We process applications as quickly as possible and will contact you when your computer is ready. Sign up for our newsletter for updates on program availability.

Can my organization get computers?

Yes! We offer Hardware Grants for nonprofit organizations. This includes Organizational Hardware Grants for your staff and Community Hardware Grants for the people you serve. Contact our Digital Inclusion team to learn more.

What if I need a computer but don't qualify for free programs?

You can purchase quality refurbished computers from our eBay store at affordable prices. We also have an Affordable Tech Program for organizations that need larger quantities at reduced prices.

Volunteering

What volunteer opportunities are available?

We offer several ways to volunteer: Warehouse volunteering (processing donated tech), Ambassador Program (spreading the word about Free Geek), hosting Tech Drives, and fundraising. There's a role for everyone regardless of technical skill level.

Do I need technical experience to volunteer?

Not at all! While some roles involve working with technology, many don't require any technical background. We provide training for all volunteer positions. Your enthusiasm and commitment matter more than prior experience.

What are the age requirements for volunteering?

Warehouse volunteers must be 18 or older. For other volunteer opportunities like Ambassador programs or tech drives, please contact us to discuss options for younger volunteers or family participation.

Can I complete community service hours at Free Geek?

Yes, we accept volunteers completing court-ordered community service or school service requirements. Contact us to discuss your requirements and we'll help set up an appropriate volunteer schedule.

Data Security

How do you protect my data?

All data-bearing devices go directly to our secure, staff-only data area. We use NIST SP800-88 compliant sanitization methods and are i-SIGMA certified. Every device is verified to ensure complete data destruction before any further processing.

What is a Certificate of Data Destruction?

A Certificate of Data Destruction is official documentation that your device's data has been securely sanitized. It includes the device serial number, destruction method, date, and staff verification. Available for $10 per device—ideal for businesses and compliance requirements.

Should I wipe my device before donating?

It's optional. If you prefer to wipe your own data, we recommend using DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) for hard drives. Even if you wipe beforehand, we'll still run our full sanitization process for complete peace of mind.

What about SSDs and phones?

We have specialized processes for SSDs, smartphones, and other modern storage devices. Our methods ensure complete data removal regardless of the storage type. Encryption keys are destroyed and storage is fully sanitized.
